The Blazer Edit

If there’s one key piece that I’m obsessing over this AW19, it’s the classic blazer. Dress them up, dress them down, on the shoulder, buttoned up, belted together, there really are so many different ways to style the one piece – and as a lover of items that can be styled and restyled until kingdom come, I’m very happy about it.

This year, tailored pieces are back and better than ever, but often restyled for a more casual, edgier look. Wearing blazers, or even full suits doesn’t always have to be formal, and you can easily integrate these items into your daily style! I wanted to put together a little blazer edit for you guys, to show the different ways I have styled my blazers over time, because they have really become a staple part of my wardrobe, and being the timeless pieces that they are, I have a feeling they are going to become some of my longest serving garments. So stay tuned for what will probably be hundreds of instalments of The Blazer Edit over the next few years.

BABY BLUE

The first blazer I want to share with you, and actually the first blazer that I ever bought out of this collection, is this beautiful baby blue number from Topshop. I originally bought it as part of a full suit after falling in love with it on the shelf. Did I need a full suit? Not really. Did I want a full suit? Absolutely.

The colour, obviously, was the first thing that stood out to me about this blazer. It was interesting enough to make a lovely suit, but not so garish that I would never have an appropriate time to wear it. If you read my post on Workwear then you will have seen this suit before. I actually wore it during my internship at Grazia magazine, and although the office was ‘casual wear’ I still didn’t feel out of place in it because it’s so easy to dress down with some trainers and a plan white t-shirt!

This is definitely my favourite way to style this suit, it’s comfortable, casual, but highly stylish. I mean, that’s literally what you want from every single outfit right?

I recently styled this blazer in a different way, and one that I loved just as much. What goes better with a blazer than a white shirt? Clean, classic and simple but once again, doesn’t have to be ridiculously formal! For this look, I styled the shirt buttoned all the way up to the top and layered it over some simple cream tailored shorts.

With these gorgeous block heeled white boots, and this Chanel-esque bag, I felt like this look was really classy, but still didn’t feel too overdressed! The boots are comfy enough for all day wear so it would be perfect for a day out somewhere, or going to a bar / restaurant!

WARM BROWN

This is probably my favourite blazer of the season. It is literally the perfect item for autumn / winter, and I have found it to be such a great transitional piece for the colder weather! The thing I love about this blazer, is that it is tailored and gorgeous like all the others I have, but the brown colour makes it less corporate than a traditional black one. It also compliments a lot of different colours in your wardrobe, and makes for a staple, yet highly wearable piece that will no doubt become your best friend.

The first way I styled this was during the warmer months (anyone remember those?), opting for a ‘smart casual’ look by pairing the blazer with some simple black cycling shorts. I used a belt to cinch in the blazer at the waist and give it some real shape. I have always been a fan of this look and I think it makes the blazer look that little bit edgier.

I topped off this look with some chunky white trainers, a classic pair of sunnies and of course, an inconveniently small (but cute) mini bag in a lovely complementary tan colour.

This has probably been one of my favourite looks I’ve styled so far! I just felt so cool and comfortable in it, and I feel like it is definitely something that could be easily dressed up or down. Overall, I give it top marks for sassiness.

Since then I have styled the blazer in a couple more ways that are similar, but slightly different. First off, in the more transitional autumn period, I simply paired it with a crisp white t-shirt and some blue jeans from Primark. I think blue jeans complement the colour of the blazer beautifully and they are such a good autumn combination!

Keeping the look casual and suitable for every day wear, I added a simple black bumbag (unfortunately I can’t afford the Louis Vuitton one), and some chunky trainers. This is such a wearable and comfy look, but you look so put together when you wear it. Once again, I think I hit the ‘smart-casual’ nail on the head with this one.

In a same-but-different style, I’ve adapted this look as we have delved deeper into winter, by swapping out the white t-shirt for a cosy knit. I still opted for the same jeans because they go together so perfectly, but I dressed up the look a bit with my new gorgeous mini bag from Primark and of course, some statement sunglasses.

I think of this look as the slightly dressier version of the one before. Perfect for a day out where you want to make an effort and look a bit glam, but still be comfortable for the whole day (aka my favourite type of outfit).

CLASSIC BLACK

Last but not least, I thought we would end with the most traditional, and timeless, blazer of the bunch. You simply cannot go wrong with a black blazer. It’s actually impossible. I heard it was to do with the laws of physics or something like that…

I fell in love with this blazer when I spotted it recently in H&M. I loved the oversized fit and the simple button detail at the front. I was looking for something minimalist, but super stylish, and this fitted the bill perfectly.

As I mentioned before, sometimes black blazers can feel a little corporate for day time wear, so I wanted to style this in a more casual way. So I started with my classic base, of a plain white knit and my all time favourite blue jeans.

The main feature of this outfit for me was this adorable little furry bucket hat I got from Primark! The hat had mixed reviews on my Instagram, but I personally love it, and I think it dresses down this outfit perfectly, making for a more interesting look!

I wanted to have a black and gold theme with my accessories because not only are they great winter colours, but they are such a gorgeous combination. So I started with my new favourite mini bag, coupled with my black and gold belt, and my lovely new watch from Cluse. All of these accessories complimented the gold buttons of the blazer nicely and helped to pull together the little details of the outfit to enhance the overall look!

Overall I think this is such a classy and cool outfit, and I just loved the way all of the components came together. As a shameless outfit repeater I can tell you now, I am going to be re-wearing this combo a LOT over winter.

I am yet to style this blazer in a different way as it was a pretty recent purchase of mine- how do you think I should style it next? Let me know in the comments below!
