One Shirt, Three Outfits

Can you actually believe that I didn’t own a white shirt until a few months ago? I know, I know, that’s actually offensive to any fashion bloggers out there reading this post. It’s one of those classic items that, once you have bought it, makes you question how you ever survived without it beforehand. The honest answer to that question is I don’t know. What I do know though, is that the simple white shirt has become a staple item in my wardrobe, and one of the most versatile pieces that I own.

After many shirtless years, I am certainly making up for lost time by styling this piece into as many outfits as I can. So, I thought the occasion called for another instalment of ‘one item, three outfits’, because we all want to know how to make the most of our clothes right?

If you haven’t already done so, then you should check out the first two posts of this series, ‘One hoodie, three outfits’ and ‘One Cardigan, Three Outfits’. It seems that over time, I have become proficient in non-obvious outfit repeating, and my bank account is pretty happy about it. Besides, I don’t know why the concept of outfit repeating is so stigmatised in the first place, I mean, surely you want your wardrobe to be full of clothes that you’re desperate to wear over and over again anyway? This is precisely how I feel about this H&M shirt, so why not have a scroll and see my favourite ways to style it?

LOOK ONE

I have already featured this look in my Autumn Lookbook, but I wanted to post about it again because it is just such a staple outfit. One of my main mottos in life is ‘you can’t go wrong with a white shirt and jeans’ and this has proven true every time.

For this look, I opted for the ‘French tuck’, because I think it’s such gives off classy, casual chic vibes. It’s such a relaxed style, but you still feel like you’ve made an effort when you wear it this way! I like to undo most of the buttons and roll up the sleeves for a more slouchy look.

Naturally, I paired the shirt with my holy grail blue jeans from Primark, my strappy sandal heels from Primark and some killer cat eye shades which are, you guessed it, also from Primark. Did I mention I like Primark? I finished it off with a gold necklace to liven up the neckline, but I also think it would look great with some statement earrings!

This outfit is the embodiment of simple but effective. It’s such an easy look to throw on, but you feel great when you wear it! The best thing about this outfit is that it would be appropriate for so many different occasions, from daytime to nighttime, giving you even more excuses to keep taking the shirt on trips outside your wardrobe.

LOOK TWO

Now for something a little dressier. Everyone loves a pop of colour and this Topshop blazer certainly fulfils that role. I first featured this blazer in my ‘A Week of Workwear’ post, where I matched it with the trousers for a full suit. But in light of my lack of opportunity to ever wear a full suit, I wanted to incorporate this gorgeous blazer into another look!

This time, I styled the shirt in a much more tailored way, doing the buttons up all the way to the top for a formal style. This shirt is not naturally that oversized, but I bought it in a size 14 to get my desired look, meaning that it is long enough for me to wear (almost) as a dress, layered over some cream shorts from Pretty Little Thing, that you inconveniently can’t actually see in these photos.

I like to wear the blazer over my shoulders for this look because I think it makes for a nicer shape and a looser fit. I finished off the look with my patent white boots from New Look and my gorgeous Chanel-esque handbag from Newlife Stores.

Overall I think this is a really classy look, but unfortunately one that I probably won’t be wearing again for a while due to the icy temperatures here in the UK. Nevertheless, I love the way this outfit came together. My friend told me that it ‘screams rich international student’, I’m not sure if that was meant to be a compliment or not but hey, I’ll take it.

LOOK THREE

The third and final look is probably my favourite of them all. Similar to the first look but not quite the same, I managed to style practically identical outfit components in a different way to create something new. Simple stuff this outfit repeating malarkey.

This time, instead of the French tuck, I opted for the tie top look. This has always been one of my favourite styles, elegant and feminine, I just think it’s such a flattering look on anyone! Styling it this way gives the shirt some more shape and makes it look a bit dressier than in the first look I wore.

Again I matched with the blue jeans and heels from Primark. I wanted this look to be a bit more dressy, so I curled my hair and accessorised with my pearl earrings from H&M and again with my gorgeous bag from Newlife. Lastly, to finish off the look, I wore my Dior rouge 999 lipstick because I thought it complimented the elegance of the outfit perfectly! By doing a bolder makeup look, it can make a simple outfit that bit more interesting, and I think red was the ideal choice for this retro-style outfit.

This is another outfit that is so easy to put on, but you feel really good when you wear it! This is an ideal look for drinks, dinner, shopping, days out, you name it. It would also suit almost any jacket you have in your wardrobe which means, hallelujah, you can keep on wearing it into the colder months (although you might have to sub in some different shoes to avoid getting frost bite on your toes).

That was easy wasn’t it? All it takes is a few staple items and you can play around with them to create a variety of different looks. At a time where it is becoming more important than ever to really love the items in your wardrobe as opposed to adopting the ‘buy to wear once’ tactic that we are all guilty of from time to time, I am really seeing the value of restyling old items. Outfit repeating doesn’t mean you don’t have nice clothes, in fact, it just means that you have killer items that look so damn good on you that the world deserves to see them styled in multiple different ways. It’s all about pleasing the people really. So why not try restyling some of you favourite items and join me in the outfit repeaters club, you might just fall in love with your wardrobe all over again…

What’s the item in your wardrobe that you wear the most? Do you have a staple item that you restyle over and over again? Let me know in the comments below!
